国立健康・栄養研究所のTanimoto ら(Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research 2008年)の研究では、若い男性36人を3つの組に分け、うち2つの組がスクワットを含む全身の5種目を週2回、13週間続けました。約55〜60%の重さでゆっくり動かした組の筋肉の厚さと筋力の伸びは、約80〜90%の重さをふつうの速さで行った組と同じくらいでした。
デメリットとして、動きの速さに偏りが出る点が調べられています。Tanimoto ら(Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research 2009年)は、ゆっくりのスクワットを続けた組で自転車をこぐときの筋肉の使い方が変わったと報告し、速い動きのスポーツには好ましくない影響があるかもしれないとしました。スポーツをする人は、ふつうの速さの筋トレも組み合わせてください。
